Kelling Heath

I wanted to discover a new site the last time I was at my parents. So I sought out Kelling Heath. It turns out that what I thought was Kelling Heath previously, was actually a mile and half away from the proper site.
It was a bright morning, not particularly warm, but there was plenty of activity on the heath.
From the car park I could hear plenty of bird song, with Skylarks, Linnets and Yellowhammer calling in the distance and my first Chiffchaff of the year.
It's a fantastic place, and I can imagine this being alive with Cuckoo calls in a few weeks time, maybe even Turtle Dove. It is supposed to be home to the Dartford Warbler and Adders, so I will be visiting again soon.

Linnets were in very good numbers on the gorse.

Great to see Yellowhammers in good numbers. One more for the year list.

  7. Those linnets are absolutely wonderful. There seems to be a hint of red on the chest, or am I imagining things? And I agree that the yellowhammer is pretty, too.

  8. I wish I could identify songs of the birds. Maybe if I gave it more attention, I could but I depend on my daughter to do that for me.

  15. . This gave us then a full day at Arnside Knott on the 2nd day. The target at Meathop Moss was the Large Heath. Despite it being late afternoon when we arrived the butterflies were easy to find and they were VERY active, settling for seconds only. Eventually I spotted a very fresh female that was getting a bit of attention from some males. In trying to hide from them she was settling a bit longer which gave us the chance we were hoping for and we both managed a few pictures of her. We then headed off for a bite to eat before going back onto site where the butterflies were still active this is impressive
