Yellow Wagtail

This is a bird that usually crosses my path totally unintentionally. The last couple of years one has turned up while I was out on general bird watching days. This year, however I mad a concerted effort to seek one out.
Altrincham Sewage Works is place I used to go to some years back. In the Spring it is very good for warblers, Yellowhammers, and passing migratory birds and also an area where many come to breed.
One of it's main attractions for me is the Yellow Wagtail. It's usually found around the horse paddocks, and this particular bird was no different. Never easy to get close too, but with good field craft (as with most birds) if you bide your time and don't appear to be a threat, they will eventually make their way towards you. I don't like to push the boundaries and this bird wasn't playing ball, so I left it to catch flies. Maybe next time it'll come closer but it was great to see through the binoculars.

Such a vibrant looking bird.

  1. Beautiful bird, Adam. I've seen the Yellow Wagtail ONCE and very fleetingly in Kenya, East Africa. It's a non-breeding uncommon migrant and although it occurs where I live in SA, I've never seen one here. Thanks for sharing. Jo

  4. He looks like a male goldfinch. I wonder if we call them by different names?

  5. Good tips for birding and I like your birding ethics...not everyone is as respectful as you are...Michelle

  6. He is very pretty -- this wagtail looks like one of our goldfinches (which are not nearly as pretty as your goldfinch -- as I may already have told you. Because whenever someone shows the English goldfinch, I get envious.) But now that I see your wagtail, I think how pretty he is and therefore, how pretty 'our' goldfinch is as well. (It isn't always necessary to wear red after all!)
