Black-tailed Godwit

Waders are some of my favourite birds to watch and especially to photograph. We came across many in Norfolk, and some came close enough to give some decent shots. Some didn't, and so we had to improvise. We used the car as a hide on this occasion. We stayed in the car and just waited (patiently) until they got in a good position with the right light.
This Black-tailed Godwit gave really decent views. The late afternoon wintry sunlight gave it a really good look.

  1. Beautiful shots!!!
I haven't come across these birds (they are a threatened species in Australia) but I do have numerous shots of the Bar-tailed Godwit which is very similar and closely related.

  3. Try as I might I can't get any shots of godwits (bar or black) Adam so I know how you worked hard to get those super shots.

  8. Love it....now I have a question, maybe you can answer....does the Godwit resemble in any similarities to the Dunlin? I saw a group of birds so similar in marking to your images, I thought they were Dunlin...but now I'm wondering if they're Godwits. [the ones I photographed have all black beaks tho] But you got me thinking if I'm even close in ID'ing them.

    1. Thank you Anni. The Dunlin is quite a lot smaller than the Godwit. The Godwit is probably 3 or 4 times larger with quite a long bill too. The plumage can look quite similar though.

Such a long bill - I guess that comes in handy when probing that sand. :)
