Cormorant

At West Kirby marine lake there are always plenty of waders around and usually roosting. I came across a Cormorant though that was particularly sleepy. I wasn't sure if it had just come in from a long flight and was exhausted, or was just generally tired. I don't normally see these asleep. They're usually fishing or standing wings aloft to dry.
Still, it gave me a chance to view this sleeping beauty.

  1. Usual stunning images, pleasure to view them. Hoping to be in Manchester 2 - 6 November to tick the elusive willow tit. Also thinking of upgrading the camera, what do you use as it seems to get good results!!

    1. Hi Derek, thank you for your kind words. Hope you are well and looking forward to your trip. The Bunting Hide awaits you. My camera is a "relatively" cheap Nikon D5100. By no means a high end camera, but it's a very decent camera at the same time. Not too complex and delivers some very good results. It comes with a good kit lens too at 18-105mm VR. There are much better out there, but for the money it's a great camera.

  3. Lovely bird. Is a cormorant also called a shag?

    1. Hi Rhonda. The Shag is a species of Cormorant. The Shag is a bit smaller and has a nice green sheen on its feathers and more of a tuft on it's head. If you scroll down the species list on the right hand side of my page and click on Shag you should be able to see one. I prefer it to the Cormorant. :)

  6. I see cormorants on both coasts here often. But have never, now that you mention it, seen one sleeping.
