I visited an brilliant place in the Peak District recently, called Padley Gorge. I parked at the bottom and made way up the gorge. A brilliant woodland and fast running water through it's rocky centre.
Birds were singing everywhere. There were a pair of Dippers to start me off, and I lost count of how many Pied Flycatchers I saw and heard. It was one of the best places I had visited for these. Common Redstarts were competing with them, plus the numerous Wrens, Blackcaps and Chiffchaffs. At the top, I found a couple of pairs of Spotted Flycatchers zipping around the tree canopy.
What I had really come for was the Wood Warbler. A bird I have only seen a few times, its one I'd not seen for a good number of years now. It was worth the 5am start and I even found two singing males.

What a wonderful bird world, these small, petite, beautiful birds fascinate me again and again. Your recordings of how they sing or what they hold in their beaks fascinate me.

I am impressed with your dedication, and you were rewarded with a plethora of species, all delightful, all special, made even more satisfying by locating your target bird. I have birded in the Peak District, and found it aesthetically satisfying as well as terrific from a birding standpoint. The sight of a Dipper in those clear, rapidly moving streams is about as good as it gets. And to munch on a sandwich while seated on a rocky outcrop is to enjoy the finest of feasts. Well done, Adam.

ReplyDeleteYou found good light for pictures ther Adam. Those three species in particular are often in so much shade that it's difficult to photograph them. Words Warblers are now very scarce in Bowland. Nice work.
