An Easter visit to my parents in Norfolk was just the right time for me to try and find my first ever Adders. I have longed to see one of these snakes in the wild for a very long time. Britain's only venomous snake. At this time of year you can see them coming out from there holes to warm themselves up in the sunshine and find a mate.
I always thought that these were a biggish sized snake. How wrong I was! They are really very small, and it's no wonder I've not come across one before. I'd have walked straight past it.
This was a real treat for me and I hope I can catch up with them again next year.
I am scared of snakes.
ReplyDeleteThere is no mistaking that pattern. I have only seen one once and that must have been about 30 years ago. It was sunning itself on the chalk of the Downs near Wrotham in Kent. Never forgotten it.

ReplyDeleteThat is a beautiful snake. I did not know that England had poisonous snakes!! We have lots of them here in Oklahoma. Several kinds of rattlesnakes, copperheads, and water moccasins.
ReplyDeleteIts pretty camouflaged for its surroundings. Great that you found one for seeing.Here in the netherlands they live mostly on the moors in the east and south of the land but never seen one in contradiction to the grass snake but that one is more for a watery environment and you have enough of that here.

ReplyDeleteI don't get excited to see a snake but how interesting that they are Britain's only venomous snake. We saw a Pygmy Rattlesnake on a hike and it was really small. It surprised us! I got pics of course! lol

ReplyDeleteSad to say, the only adder I have seen was a dead one. Camping near Hawkshead many years ago, some scumbag took great delight in showing the camp site an adder he had killed.
