Bullfinch

Something to brighten up any birding trip for me is always seeing a Bullfinch. Stunning birds and the males in particular with their bright pink breast and black head. Never easy to locate when in the trees as they stay quiet and are easily spooked. Some help is often required, such as a feeding station. This can almost guarantee a sighting and can often mean some decent perched poses too.

Can anyone notice anything unusual about this individual? Look closely.

  1. Didn't realise that you were at Pennington Flash today. I was the birder from N Ireland you helped out. I follow your blog to keep me in the loop when I come over so it was nice to meet you. My own blog can be found at

  5. That little stinky has his foot pulled up and hidden in his body feathers. Just showing off how he can stand on one leg. Silly thing.

  8. Try as I might I would never get Bullfinches to my garden feeding station. They are just very scarce near our coast but a little more common inland.

  21. As some of you have guessed, the little guy in the first two pictures seems to be standing on one leg. Not your usual behaviour for a Bullfinch.

  22. Our chickens and ducks sometimes stand on one leg. I have no idea why they do it but, like the bullfinch, they seem quite at ease on one leg.

Many thanks for adding bullfinches to #AnimalTales - they are lovely birds that always give me a thrill when I see them (which is not very often).
