Kestrel

I love to watch raptors overhead. More of often than not its a Buzzard that makes itself obvious to me with its large wingspan, but in recent weeks I've come across plenty of Kestrels hovering at the roadside and in fields.
Not always easy to get a picture of, as they are more often than not on the move. These pictures are a little grainy, but the best I've managed so far. Maybe that will be a project for this year. Get better Kestrel pictures.

  1. I used to see so many kestrels as I travelled backwards and forwards from London to Manchester but I can't remember the last time I saw one. It's good to hear that you see them so frequently.

  5. A beautiful bird of prey with incredible flying skills (e.g.hovering).

Your photos don't disappoint... one appears to show hovering action!

  8. Great bird - used to be called Wind F****rs - when the word meant 'dominate or overcome' - strange the way language changes.

  11. Like you say Adam, never easy because as soon as you get focused in on the bird it decides to move off and hover elsewhere.

I do always over expose when photographing a Kestrel against a bright blue sky.

  15. They are great pictures. I have noticed more kestrels this year compared to the start of last year hunting alongside roads and regular ones round Frodsham Marsh.
